The Legacy

I love this cartoon. Can cartoons make their Daddies proud? Below are some of the sketches I did. You can't believe how hard this thing was to draw and finally put together.

Not so super

Still ticks me off

So I drew this the morning after Steve King made these comments at his press conference announcing his bid for reelection, but I decided to use it for the March 20 issue of the PRESS after all. Not just because I put so much work into it or because I'm so busy today (Mar. 16) but mostly because, he still ticks me off.

Of course, now Geraldine Ferraro has been being a racist too, and oil has not topped $110/barrel.

This is the third time that I've used this old Polaroid gimmick now, I'll have to be careful not to over do it, but I really think that it's a fun gag.

I don't know if it was Garrison Keillor or who, that said that men basically get a favorite haircut and then try to stick with it for the rest of their lives.

I think I like using a smaller type size better for the captions. Makes it look a lot less clunky.

Whatever works

At the rate she's going, she may still be able to snatch defeat for the Democrats from the mouth of victory! I don't know how well I did at drawing Hillary this time, but I'm pretty proud of my Harold Ickes and Terry McAuliffe!

Usually my columns and cartoons are pretty independent of each other, but this week the compliment each other pretty well. Click here to read "Confession is good for the soul" from the March 13 Mapleton PRESS.

In the interest of full disclosure, so that no one accuses me of plagiarism, this is actually a direct quote from Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice, eccentric Washington socialite especially during the administration of her Dad's cousin Franklin. But in this case, I just thought that the name Lauraine was a lot funnier than Alice would be. Lauraine looks a little bit like my mom, and a little like may late great Aunt Ellen, maybe my friend Michelle, a reporter for the Mapleton PRESS. We've all known somebody like Alice/Lauraine, right?

I was going to name this guy Bob, but he looks a little too much like my neighbor Bob, who is a really nice guy and I didn't want to risk having Bob think I was trying to make fun of him. Maybe I'll name some other character Bob, so long as they don't look like my neighbor Bob.

More Pro Bono Work

I donated my Steve King Cartoon to a Democratic website dedicated to preventing his re-election; http://www.kingwatch.org/bigotry.html

I don't know about the ethics here, I figure political cartoonists are unavoidably partisan if not mercenary, right? I didn't get any money out of the deal (perhaps a counter-productive move, career-wise) but I was just so outraged by King's comments about Obama, that I'm glad to prostrate my skills for the sake of exposing his dark soul (if he has one)!

Plus, what the heck, it widens my exposure- which has to be good in the long-run.

We all know somebody like Everett, don't we? Often they suffer from halitosis on top of it.

More 'Mal•Adjusted'

Guess you have to live in rural Iowa for this one to be funny. I grew up in Phoenix and always felt like a "poser" if I wore boots or Western wear. I loved the stuff, but knew I was a suburbanite and didn't deserve to wear the stuff that real working horsemen and cattlemen and farmers and ranchers wore. Urban/Rhinestone Cowboy and all that stuff.

Introducing... "Mal•Adjusted"

I've decided to start disciplining myself to draw non-political cartoons on a more regular basis too. So, starting today, I'll try to post a panel feature that I'm calling "Maladjusted." Maybe if I gather up 100 or so, I can start mailing them out to magazines and syndicates and see what happens. At least it's not QUITE as narrow a field as editorial cartooning. If nothing else, it's a fun hobby, right?

Usually you see "web-cartoons" appear on a regular interval, like "Every Thursday" or something like that, but I want to be more flexible- allow my self to go in gluts some weeks and have creative blocks other weeks. Besides, it's not like I don't have a life and a day job.

Hope you like 'em!

And no, this one is not supposed to look like the late SNL actor John Candy, just a coincidence.

Believe me, Iowa's 5th District is NOT as racist or stupid as our Congressman

Here is the finished cartoon. I sent it to KingWatch.org and they're talking about using it, but I still haven't made up my mind about the March 20 Mapleton PRESS thing- for one it will be 2 weeks old, for another a lot can happen between now and Friday when I turn a cartoon in to them. Hillary Clinton and George Bush could do lots of stupid things between now and then, for that matter, so can Steve King!

Rep. Steve King (R) of Iowa's 5th District strike's again!

Last night on the local news, my idiot Congressman ACTUALLY said pretty much just what I wrote above about Barack Obama. I was so incensed that I HAD to draw this cartoon. Of course, due to plumbing disasters, we're temporally living with my in-laws while our home undergoes repairs, so I am without PhotoShop till I go back to school on Monday, so I'm posting it pretty raw. If I use it for the PRESS for March 20, I'll obviously rework it some- but then the incident will also be 2 weeks old, so who knows if I will or not.

Classwork

My Art classes were displaced today. The Spanish teacher needed my room to deep fry sopapias. She has a big sombrero in her room and I couldn't resist drawing 7th grader, Jacen (that's how he spells it) here on her board.

His "Spanish name" is Paco and the only Spanish he knows is "I don't like Chicken in my water," so I went with it.
