Their job, to make him look bad

Call it a preemptive strike. I don't know how long the honeymoon will last, and I want to try to keep an open mind and be willing to be critical when he does mess up, but you know the day will come when this cartoon is totally applicable, for all we know it may even be Wednesday already. I heard Newt Gingrich on NPR this morning and yadda yadda yadda, Republicans need to blame Bush, but we can't let the "LIBERAL" Democrats get away with too much, yadda yadda, position-himself-for-2012.

Cartoon for Sept 18 Mapleton PRESS

Barks like a duck, attacks like a duck... Now- I never caller her anything that rhymes with rich- you're reading something into this material.

I loved how Obama clarified his comments on David Letterman, McCain's policies are the pig- Sarah Palin is the lipstick! McCain used the "lipstick on a pig" line months before Obama about supposed liberal Democratic policies anyway. And don't forget, Palin called herself a pitbull with lipstick, even before she was picked for VP. Although some people say she's more of a lapdog since McCain's campaign won't let the press ask her any serious questions.

Here, I kind of wanted to see ahead of time how it will look in black and white:

Caricature

I had too much fun with this for it to be so tiny in an cartoon.
So here it is writ LARGE.
A few too many positive comments from conservatives on that cartoon for my blood, I may have to go back to being partisan.

Cartoon for the Aug 21 Mapleton PRESS

There, now you can't say I've never drawn an anti-Obama cartoon!

I'm mailing my first envelopes of columns and cartoons today, to the The Washington Post Writers Group. Wish me luck. Probably won't hear anything for a month or more.

Shoot a mile, I just realized something- (no doubt a pitfall of using Photoshop) I failed to put my signature on this one anywhere. Dang. Well, obviously I owe credit to Raphael and the Denver tourism bureau anyway.

Cartoon for the July 31, 08 PRESS

Elvis is IN the building, no wait, today he's still in Germany. Will it be another JFK? Or would that be counter productive? Is it too soon to come off too presidential?

Has anyone told McCain that there is no Chezkslovakia anymore, that Iraq and Afghanistan don't share a border, that Iran was training Hamas members, not Al Queda members, or how to use the internet? Is he senile or just dumb? And if Obam had made the same mistakes- especially in say a 2 week period, wouldn't the media have eaten him alive? And here's another thing- (and please forgive me for using these ugly words, it's just to make a point) if it's wrong for Jesse Jackson to use the word "nigger," why is it okay for McCain to use the word "Gook?" Isn't it insanely racist against Asians?

There was a time when I had patience for, even a level of comfort with McCain, but I just can't seem to take him seriously anymore.

Believe me, Iowa's 5th District is NOT as racist or stupid as our Congressman

Here is the finished cartoon. I sent it to KingWatch.org and they're talking about using it, but I still haven't made up my mind about the March 20 Mapleton PRESS thing- for one it will be 2 weeks old, for another a lot can happen between now and Friday when I turn a cartoon in to them. Hillary Clinton and George Bush could do lots of stupid things between now and then, for that matter, so can Steve King!

Rep. Steve King (R) of Iowa's 5th District strike's again!

Last night on the local news, my idiot Congressman ACTUALLY said pretty much just what I wrote above about Barack Obama. I was so incensed that I HAD to draw this cartoon. Of course, due to plumbing disasters, we're temporally living with my in-laws while our home undergoes repairs, so I am without PhotoShop till I go back to school on Monday, so I'm posting it pretty raw. If I use it for the PRESS for March 20, I'll obviously rework it some- but then the incident will also be 2 weeks old, so who knows if I will or not.

Still running

So here it was, January 3- Caucus Day, but EVERY Thursday is deadline day so I HAD to email SOMETHING in. Who knows at 2:30 in the afternoon what will be decided at 9 at night? I have a feeling that Edwards and McCain will surprise everyone, but I threw Obama in front just because he tall. Notice Mike Bloomberg lurking over his shoulder!

(Well, whddyaknow? I got lucky when I put Obama front and center! Lucky pick)

This was a lot of work, drawing all these caricatures. I think that I did the worst job on Mitt Romney because he's so dang bland. Here is a legend to help you tell who's who, in case you're not a political junkie like me, or in case my caricatures are so bad that you can't recognize them.

2008 presidential candidates;
  1. Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY, Democrat)
  2. Sen. John McCain (AZ, Republican)
  3. Former Sen. John Edwards (SC, D)
  4. Sen. Barack Obama (Il, D)
  5. Mayor Michael Bloomberg (NY, Independent)
  6. Gov. Mike Huckabee (AR, R)
  7. Former Gov. Mitt Romney (MA, R)

Just a caricature

I don't know. Maybe I'm too critical of myself, maybe I'm corrupted by the fact that I kinda like the guy, but I think this is pretty mild. It's not funny enough or exaggerated enough to be funny or great satire... but it's also not detailed enough or subtle enough to be serious as portraiture or illustration. Just kind of okay.

True colors?

Some of my Republican friends like to give me a hard time because they think I never draw cartoons that pick on Democrats. Well, here ya are. But now to make up for it, I wrote a firey anti-Bush column that week.

Joe's gaff was an editorial cartoonist's DREAM. It was TOO easy to nail him, regardless of party.

In the interest of self-disclosure; I really like Biden. I don't think he could get elected even if he hadn't put his foot in his mouth this way. As much as I like him, I liked Obama more- even before this incident. Biden is smart as a whip and has tons of experience. President Obama would be smart to bring him on board as a foreign policy adviser. That would give weight to all his talk about healing and "one America" too.
