Not so inteligent
I took a lot of time learning tricks in Adobe PhotoShop to give Washington the look he has, rolling his eyes with the raised eyebrow. Too bad that I haven't really got my "G.W. Bush 43" down pat yet.

Spasms

I know that the real prominent feature on the Secretary is the gap in her teeth, but I think she has mean lookin' eyes- so that's what I went with. Here's the original sketch-

Ioweagan Home Companion
Here are a couple of fun ones from 2006 that I don't have exact dates for. Both of these are pretty unique to Iowa.

Above is the proof when I put the whole page together for the newspaper. Below is a "tare-sheet" (the actual published page).
Maid-Rite is a local Iowa fast food chain, they actually sell these things. It's an acquired taste. I'm a transplant from out West. Jello-salad grows on ya.
I swear deer seem to reproduce in Iowa faster than rats in New York City. They have fawns faster than motorists can hit them. Needless to say my own fender inspired this cartoon about animal jihadists.

Red Herring
Sort of a pet peeve of mine; emotional wedge issues that distract from genuine policy issues. GrrrrThis was the first cartoon in about a 2 year run for the small stable of newspapers in Western Iowa. First in the Charter Oak-Ute Newspaper and Schleswig Leader, printed by Lyon Publishing. The Lyons sold their three papers to Enterprise Publishing, who's HQ is in Blair NE. Eventually Enterprise folded the NEWSpaper and the Leader into their parent paper, the Mapleton PRESS, but they began running my column & cartoon in the PRESS.

It usually burns up on re-entry

July 2006, STS-121; "An analysis of the inspections revealed the presence of bird droppings on the leading edge of the right wing. The launch director has said he saw droppings in that location before launch. During the crew press conference on landing day the crew joked about the bird droppings indicating that they were still present on the orbiter though rather charred." (Wikipedia)
I just decided to post this under today's date, I don't remember what day it ran in the Charter Oak-Ute NEWSpaper back in the summer of '06.
That wasn't the only bird trouble this shuttle had- "STS-121 was the first launch during which NASA took special precautions to deter vultures, particularly the local turkey vultures, from flying over the area. Efforts included the swift removal of roadkill and other dead animals from areas around the launch site." (also Wikipedia)

Here's an illustration I did for the feature layout done on a Community Fund-Raiser/Theater entitled "The Saga of Sagebrush Sal" that ran in our local Charter Oak-Ute NEWSpaper

Go Bulldogs!
In case you didn't know it, I coach high school cheerleading. This cartoon was inspired by a great friend and former student, Kenny- who was our first mascot. Believe me, mascots can be surreal, at least Kenny's surreal.

Trying a little too hard with the brush there, I think- but half-way decent caricatures of Clinton and Yeltsin for just being a young college kid

Clinton stuck with Saddam
In early 1993, Iraq enjoyed lobbing SCUD missiles at Israel. With Bush Sr. out of office people wondered if the new President would keep Iraq in line.

Too wierd for small town Iowa

Have you heard the one about the Art Major and the Farmer's Daughter? The summer we got married was our town's Centennial and we both worked for the local newspaper, the Charter Oak-Ute NEWSpaper. Somehow, I talked the Publishers into running some of my cartoons for the next couple of years. I don't know when any of these actually ran, and in fact a couple of them may have ran in the college newspaper too, or instead. So I guessed the year and labeled this post on National Cartoonist Day of that year (May 5). Although, hay bales are usually something you see later in the summer and in the fall. Two of my best friends bought the original of the Elvis one at my Senior show and had it hanging in their basement for years. That was really sweet of them. Somebody make me famous so that it will be worth something for them. Thanks.

Who needs revenue anyway?
I don't know the actual date in 1992 when this one ran in my college newspaper, 'the Sower' but I love the elephant I drew. Funny how 16 years later Republicans still claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility and try to make people fear how Democrats will tax and spend when they've been cutting taxes for the filthy rich and screwing the rest of us since 1981!

Esoteric theology
So I was re-reading some of "Short Meditations on the Bible and Peanuts" c. 1990 by Robert Short (author of "The Gospel According to Peanuts" 1965 and "Parables of Peanuts"1968), and it once again highlighted for me how much I prefer Kierkegaard to Hegel both philosophically and theologically and that prompted me to remember this cartoon I did for my college newspaper. A Lutheran college. I dawned on me that Bill Waterson probably named his strip after Protestant John Calvin ("liberal" theology compared to Martin Luther's) and Philosopher Thomas Hobbes (sort of the opposite of John Locke) who believed that human nature is brutish, selfish and immature. Anyway, even at Concordia University, Nebraska- where they prepare more professional church workers and pre-seminary candidates than any other Missouri-Synod college, this cartoon was still hopelessly obscure and esoteric. No wonder one syndicate told me that people should be able to "get" a cartoon faster without having to read or think as much as they have to with my "Mal•Adjusted" panel.

Nixon hailed as a national hero
I don't remember the publication date of this one in my college paper, but the Tiananmen Square uprising was in 1989 and the opera "Nixon in China" ran on Broadway 1983-87. All I know is that whatever the news item was that inspired this was an excuse for me to draw Nixon.
